600,000 civilians at risk of mass atrocities by the RSF in North Darfur

  • The RSF is likely to capture El Fasher and attack Zamzam IDP camp in the next 2-3 weeks, warns Nonviolent Peaceforce -

  •  Medical facilities in the region, including Saudi Hospital, have been attacked, according to the latest Yale Humanitarian Research Lab report -

30 AUG -- Over half a million displaced people in the Zamzam camp are at imminent risk of mass atrocities, warns Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP), as Rapid Support Forces (RSF) prepare to capture El Fasher city within weeks.

NP also warns that:

  • Living conditions in the city are impossible for the 2.8 million people who live there, including 1 million who fled from other parts of Sudan. They face widespread bombing and violence - even trying to find water is life threatening - and essential items like food and medicine are non-existent.

  • Yet most cannot flee due to extortionate transport costs and armed men controlling the major roads; the cost of 20 liters of fuel has risen to roughly $500 USD.

  • Man-made famine now stalks Zamzam camp - as confirmed by the Famine Review Committee. Hundreds of thousands who sought safety and basic provisions in the camp, are finding neither.

  • “We are deeply concerned about the deteriorating situation in North Darfur. The place is already one of the hardest on earth to survive in and all analysis warns it will just get worse,” shared Nic Pyatt, Head of Mission for Nonviolent Peaceforce in Sudan.”

In a separate report - medical facilities in the region, including one of the main hospitals - hospitals, have been attacked. The latest Yale Humanitarian Research Lab report released yesterday found:

  • Saudi Hospital, Timbasi Health Centre, and the medical storage warehouse of Relief International were bombarded with artillery between 19 July to 18 August.

  • The RSF also continues to block MSF’s supply trucks from entering the city, further reducing the already scarce health services in El Fasher.

  • The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) 6th Infantry Division HQ is surrounded to the north, east, and southeast by the RSF. SAF and its allies currently have the smallest area of control since fighting intensified in May 2024.
